HAPPY NEW
YEAR
As you have
probably heard by now, the Wooster Amateur Radio Club held an election of Club
officers to serve for 2006. As one member observed, "The train went through in a
hurry!" The following were elected to respective posts:
President
Russell McQuate
K8RMC
Vice President David
Balint
N8IW
Secretary, Treasurer Stan
Kinney N8RNK
Tom Zilko, N8JBG will move to Past President. Committee Chairpersons can be
found on the Club's website at www.w8woo.org.
MEETING
REMINDER
As a
reminder, the Club meets on the third Thursday of every month at the Wayne
County Communications Center on the corner of Burbank and Oldman roads in
Wooster. Meetings start at 7:30pm.
JANUARY
MEETING
January's
meeting will be on the 19th and, following the Club's regular business meeting,
we are pleased to have a presentation on APRS (Automatic Position Reporting
System) as used in the sport of hot air ballooning. Charlie Holt, KB8CMN, a
ballooning enthusiast, has put together a lot of data and information that will
help you understand and possibly get started with APRS. You won't want to miss
this presentation.
TENTATIVE PROGRAM SCHEDULE FOR FIRST HALF
OF THE YEAR
In an
effort to spur more Club member activity and to provide a forum where we can all
discuss Ham Radio, we have the following presentations and discussions scheduled
for the first few months of 2006:
. FEBRUARY - JUNK
AUCTION
Clean up
your shack and help the Club at the same time. This is always a fun night and,
who knows, you may come home with that treasure you have always been looking
for.
. MARCH - UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL
MODES
Dave Balint,
N8IW, has consented to lead a discussion and impart some information on several
of the more popular digital modes being used in ham radio currently. We may
possibly meet at K8RMC's shack so that we can utilize his equipment for this
demonstration.
. APRIL - TALKING THROUGH
SATELLITES
Jim Henry,
KC8RRT, is putting together a great program on the "ins and outs" of satellite
communication. Jim brought his equipment and expertise to our 2005 field day,
giving us an added feature to display to the general public.
.
MAY - DAYTON
HAMVENTION
Since a good
many Club members make an effort to attend the Dayton Hamvention, we may choose
to skip the May meeting. We'll keep you informed.
. JUNE -
MOHICAN 100 MILE RUN AND FIELD
DAY
These two events have
been annual favorites of most Club members. Again, it might make things too busy
if we "sandwich" in a monthly meeting. We'll also let you know on this
one.
. OTHER TENTATIVE
PROGRAMS
We are currently
trying to set up a presentation by the Red Cross. With all the disaster activity
of late, we would do well to "get up to speed" on their programs as they relate
to Ham Radio. We are also exploring the availability of setting up a SkyWarn
training session. This is very tentative and we'll keep you up to date on our
progress.
ANNUAL DUES NOW
DUE
Your 2006 dues
are now due. Dues are $17 per year and can be paid directly to the
Treasurer.
MANSFIELD
HAMFEST
Your Club has
purchased two tables at the Mansfield Mid-Winter Hamfest and Computer Show,
February 12, 2006, at the Richland County Fairgrounds. More information can be
found on www.iarc.ws. Here is you chance to sell that piece of equipment that is
taking up space in your shack and convert it into cash so you can buy more
equipment to take up space in your shack. Bring your sale items to the hamfest
and help both yourself and your Club. The Club only charges 10% of your sale
price to help offset the table cost and fund other programming
activities.
