CARROLL COUNTY

RECYCLING

&

LITTER PREVENTION

Introduction

The Community Recycling and Litter Prevention Grant is the main funding source for the Recycling and Litter Prevention Department. This grant comes from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention. Carroll County applies for the grant and the match money along with some additional funds are provided by the Carroll-Columbiana-Harrison Solid Waste Management District. The District provides the drop-off sites for all of the recyclables.

The goal is to promote solid waste reduction and its many aspects, which include reusing, precycling, recycling, buying recycled, and litter prevention. This is done through education and awareness within the schools and throughout the community. A litter collection activity is also conducted part-time for most of the year to alleviate the litter problem along roadways and in public parks. For the year 2001 the Non-Residential Waste Reduction Activity was added and a brochure was designed. This activity was set up to assist businesses in reducing their waste through reuse, recycling or waste exchange programs. The brochure can still be picked up at the Carroll County Courthouse (2nd floor) or one can be mailed directly to you.

Reusing

Reusing simply means to use your discarded items or packaging in some other way. If possible, fix items that are durable instead of throwing them away. Send outgrown clothing to places like the Goodwill or the local Hospice Resale Shop where they will be used again or recycled into rug padding, new rags, or other items. Garage sales are also good places to go to practice the art of reusing.

Precycling

Precycling involves thinking ahead of time when you purchase items. What types of packaging are recyclable in your area? Find out prior to shopping and choose your purchases carefully. If you do this, you will minimize the amount of waste that you have every week. Buying in bulk will also cut down on your packaging.

Recycling

Recycling involves little more than a commitment to do it; it's not hard. Once you find out what is recyclable, then all you have to do is:
  1. Remove the lid and discard it if it's plastic or recycle it if it's metal.
  2. Rinse out the container.
  3. Crush the container if it is plastic, tin, or aluminum. (optional-to save space)
  4. Place in your recycling bin until you can take it to the nearest drop-off site.

In Carroll County the following items are recyclable at the present time:
