CARROLL COUNTYRECYCLING&LITTER PREVENTION |

The goal is to promote solid waste reduction and its many aspects, which include reusing, precycling, recycling, buying recycled, and litter prevention. This is done through education and awareness within the schools and throughout the community. A litter collection activity is also conducted part-time for most of the year to alleviate the litter problem along roadways and in public parks. For the year 2001 the Non-Residential Waste Reduction Activity was added and a brochure was designed. This activity was set up to assist businesses in reducing their waste through reuse, recycling or waste exchange programs. The brochure can still be picked up at the Carroll County Courthouse (2nd floor) or one can be mailed directly to you.

ReusingReusing simply means to use your discarded items or packaging in some other way. If possible, fix items that are durable instead of throwing them away. Send outgrown clothing to places like the Goodwill or the local Hospice Resale Shop where they will be used again or recycled into rug padding, new rags, or other items. Garage sales are also good places to go to practice the art of reusing. |

PrecyclingPrecycling involves thinking ahead of time when you purchase items. What types of packaging are recyclable in your area? Find out prior to shopping and choose your purchases carefully. If you do this, you will minimize the amount of waste that you have every week. Buying in bulk will also cut down on your packaging. |

In Carroll County the following items are recyclable at the present time:
This includes good quality white office paper, newspaper, magazines, catalogs, phone books and paperback books. Envelopes are considered a contaminant because of the plastic window and the glue; also some junk mail has contaminents like stickers and plastic.
All three colors of glass jars and bottles-green, brown, and clear are accepted for recycling. However, we cannot recycle window glass, china, light bulbs, or mirrors.

Plastic BottlesOnly plastic bottles #1 and #2 are accepted. Many items like detergent, shampoo, cleaning products, milk, pop, etc. come in bottles labeled #1 and #2, but you have to look on the bottom for the "chasing arrows triangle" (see below). It must have a number #1 or #2 inside. Some plastics resemble each other and if you don't look, you could have other numbers that are not accepted. You will also notice that there are "wide-mouthed" containers that are labeled #1 and #2 (such as butter tubs and cool whip containers); but they are not accepted at this time. Plus, no motor oil or anti-freeze bottles are accepted. |

Aluminum, bi-metal, and tin-coated steel cans are accepted. No pie tins, aluminum foil or frozen dinner aluminum is accepted.

Julie Hykes, Program Manager for the Carroll County Recycling and Litter Prevention Office, can visit your classroom, club meeting, or gathering to explain about recycling and litter prevention. Mrs. Hykes does all kinds of presentations including one addressing "Litter Habits" where members of the audience use fishing poles to catch laminated paper fish in a simulated lake. She can also do workshops with the students or group members and cover paper recycling, paper jewelry recycling, plastic recycling, or even natural recycling. Natural recycling covers the use of a worm bin and some elementary concepts about worms, who are natural recyclers. Composting is also considered a form of natural recycling and information booklets are available at the Ohio State University Extension-Carroll County Office (330-627-4310). "Green Shopping Tours" is an activity where Mrs. Hykes can lead students through the local store showing wise environmental choices. She can make an "Edible Landfill" to help students understand how landfills are constructed; and an activity called "Home Safe Home," which covers household hazardous waste and some safe alternatives." She can appear as herself or as the program mascot Dr. G. B. Green ( Dr. "Gee! Everybody, Be Green"). When she appears as Dr. Green, the point that she wants to get across is for everyone to "Be Green" or to be kind to the environment in whatever you do. This can mean anything from saving energy, water, reusing items, recycling, adopting an area or not littering. There is a learning station on recycling, litter, and pollution that can be borrowed and many other media items that are listed below. Plus, new programs are being planned from time to time. Currently, the program is working on a Jeopardy game to bring into the classroom.

Many, many THANKS go out to our latest Adopt-An-Area group/family--the Carroll County Volunteer Fire Dept.!!! They have adopted Bacon Rd. from State Route 43 to Jasmine Rd.
The program appreciates all the help it can get when it comes to litter---cause there's tons of it! According to the Litter Crew Supervisor, Chuck Graber, there were 37.2 tons of it that were picked up by himself and his crew in 2004. From March until July of 2005, the crew has picked up 19.1025 tons of litter and illegally dumped trash. In that figure were 382 tires. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, the litter crew will not be back in October and November 2005 as planned and, since there is no grant at all in 2006, the program as we know it will end completely.
