This list contains videos, books, and computer programs, which can be borrowed by contacting the office. They are alphabetical by title:

"ADOPT-A-ROADWAY" - 9:30 min. - This video is from the Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention, Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources and features actress, Linda Gray. The subject covered pertains to groups or families adopting road areas. Safety precautions are discussed; this is a good video for groups to review safety guidelines prior to clean-ups. - 1997 - (intermediate grades to adult)

"THE ADVENTURES OF WAYAN AND THE 3 R's" - 15:00 min. - This video covers not only the standards: reduce, reuse, recycle, but also, looks at the culture of Bali in Indonesia. Wayan and his friends are concerned with the excess plastic that seems to litter the beautiful country of Bali, so they find ways to reuse and recycle it. The story is told by intermingling it with a shadow puppet play, which are popular in Bali. - (primary to intermediate grades)

"BACKYARD COMPOSTING" - This "how to" book claims to be a "complete guide to recycling yard clippings." It has instructions on how to build a composter, hot recipes to keep your compost working and some troubleshooting tips. - 1992 - (intermediate grades to adult) (2 copies)

BROTHER EAGLE, SISTER SKY - This book carries a message from Chief Seattle of the Suquamish Indians. His ideas came from many generations of his people. He makes you think about the importance of everything on the earth and how we are forever joined to it. - 1991 - (primary grades to adult)

"THE BUSY, BUSY PLANET" - 11:00 min. - This video is put out by the American Plastics Council and discusses the many benefits of plastic in our busy world. It promotes saving energy and resources through recycling and buying recycled content plastic products. - 1995 - (intermediate grades through adult)

"BUYING RECYCLED" - 120:00 min. - This tape was made of a live satellite videoconference put on by the EPA Wastewise Program to promote "America Recycles Day". It has an overview of buying recycled products. Then, representatives from the McDonald's Corporation, Office Plan, Inc., and an Environmental Purchasing Coordinator from King County Procurement Services Division, share some buying recycled success stories. - 11/9/99 - (secondary grades to adult)

"CLEANING UP TOXICS: AT HOME" - 25:15 min. - This tape discusses some of the toxic chemicals that are used in the home and changes that can be made to reduce the amount of those toxic chemicals that are used. - (intermediate grades to adult) P.P.R.

"EARTH KEEPING" - GARBALOGY -7:07 min. - Counter 193/1062 - Ira Flato (Newton's Apple) introduces garbologist, Dr. Wm. Rathji who examines garbage across the county and talks about biodegradation and source reduction. - BURGER FAMILY - 7:19 min. - Counter 1063/1817 - This part of the tape deals with a family that has "Gone Green"; they only have 1 can of garbage per year and they discuss how they did it. - TURNING TRASH INTO CASH - 7:30 min. - Counter 1817/2263 - Dan Knapp, a sociologist in Berkley, CA got all kinds of things that still had value from the Berkley landfill. He started a salvage company called Urban Ore, which sells items that would normally go to the dump. EARTHWORMS - This Teacher's Guide has been put together by the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California at Berkeley. It contains three sessions for students with data and graphing sheets that can be copied. - 1996 - (grades 6-10)

"THE EARTH MACHINE: 21ST CENTURY HOME COMPOSTING" - 9:00 min. - This video promotes "The Earth Machine", which is a home composter. It shows how to assemble and use it. - 1992 - (secondary grades to adult) (2 copies)

"EARTH TO KIDS" - 28:00 min. - This tape shows what kids can do to help the earth. A "Sandwich" talks about trash and the fact that there is a way to shop to reduce your trash; the "One-timers" are people who buy all kinds of disposable items from plastic silverware to razors; the "Tooth Fairy" talks about toothpaste (pumps and tubes); there's a can recycling story and "Rap Dancers" who illustrate the pros and cons of alkaline versus rechargeable batteries. "ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND-PSA's" - 0:00:40 sec. - Two ads promoting recycling by the Environmental Defense Fund and Ohio Department of Natural Resources. - 1994 - (primary grades to adult)

50 SIMPLE THINGS KIDS CAN DO TO RECYCLE - This edition of the book was specially made for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention. It covers all kinds of ideas that kids can do either at home or at school to help recycle. Some of the chapters cover what can be recycled; others discuss reducing waste, reusing, precycling and making your own recycled paper. - 1994 - (intermediate grades to adult) (25 copies)

50 SIMPLE THINGS YOUR BUSINESS CAN DO TO SAVE THE EARTH - This guide discusses ideas that businesses can adopt. It covers the topics of recycling, saving energy, saving water, and preventing pollution. - 1991 - (secondary grades to adult)

"GARBAGE, GARBAGE, GARBAGE" - 15:00 min. - A Canadian video that addresses the problem of solid waste by having a young girl talk about animals who don't use packaging, which is the major reason for all of our excess waste. She also visits a landfill. There is one vignette showing "garbage inspectors" and one where boys are experimenting with popcorn for packing breakable items. - (primary grades to adult)

"GARBAGE IN AMERICA - VOLUME I : THE CHOICE IS OURS" - 20:00 min. - This video is part of a series, which takes a hard look at America's garbage problem. This one concentrates on our solid waste crisis discussing four "R's": revise, reuse, recycle, and recovery when trying to solve the problem. Topics include: reusing items, recycling items, composting, material recovery facilities (MRF), household hazardous waste, and solid waste to energy or landfills. - 1988 - (intermediate grades to adult)P.P.R.

"GARBAGE IN AMERICA - VOLUME II : HAZARDOUS WASTE-PRIORITY ONE" - 23:00 min. - This tape is the second of the series about America's garbage problem. This one discusses all kinds of hazardous waste as far as: how did it happen? and who is responsible? It also shows a model program in San Francisco that is helping to eliminate hazardous waste from homes and landfills. It stresses that designers and manufacturers need to eliminate these types of items from production so we will not have to worry about getting rid of them. - 1989 - (intermediate grades to adult) P.P.R.

"GARBAGE IN AMERICA - VOLUME III : SANITARY LANDFILLS-OPTIONS AND SOLUTIONS" - 27:00 min. - This is the third in the series about our garbage problem. This video deals with the fact that America is running out of landfill space and discusses the alternatives: combustion, source reduction, recycling and reusing. It also stresses that we should create less, so there is less to dispose of and we must work together to achieve goals regarding the environment. - 1990 - (intermediate grades to adult) P.P.R.

THE GREAT RECYCLING ADVENTURE - This book by Jan McHarry is full of pictures and has flaps to lift, wheels to turn, and tabs to pull on every page. Each page deals with different kinds of recycling: paper, metal, plastic, glass, and textiles. The illustrations are intricate and there are explanations on each type of recycling. - 1994 - (primary grades to adult)

"GREEN EXPLORER, Your blueprint to an 'eco-friendly' world" - This computer software is a 1993 MicroBase Publishing, Inc. program for a IBM or IBM compatible computer with at least 2Mb of memory., a 3.5 Disk Drive, a hard disk drive with at least 4Mb of available disk space, an 80286, 80386 or 80486, etc. processor with Microsoft Windows Version 3.1 or higher, a mouse or other pointing device compatible with Microsoft Windows 3.1, and an EGA (or higher resolution) monitor that is also Windows compatible. The program must be installed on the computer's hard drive. This disk has the history of recycling and how to accomplish recycling in the home, office or work place. It has a House tour, Book history, Hammer and Screwdriver projects, Rolodex ECO Address Base, Check Mark Quiz, and a Dashing Arrow for Quick Find. - 1993-(primary grades to adult)

"A GREEN SHOPPING TOUR" - 16:00 min. - Carroll County Program Manager, Julie Grunder visits a landfill and a grocery store to talk about how you can reduce your solid waste by purchasing products that can be recycled and products that have already been recycled. This video was done using Buckeye Career Center video and technology students. - 1996 - (primary to adult) (3 copies) P.P.R.

"HENRY CYCLE SPECIAL" - 23:00 min. - Henry Cycle is a cartoon character. This video shows Henry helping a peanut factory reduce waste and use recyclable and recycled products. There is also a "bad" character called, Gator, who makes Ima Hippo aware of recycling, composting, and reusing even though he didn't set out to do that. (primary grades to adult)

"IT'S NOT TOO LATE CARROLL COUNTY" - 17:00 min. - Carroll County's own video based upon the play of the same name. Fourth graders at Willis Elementary from Mechanicstown acted out parts that covered the three "R's": recycling, waste reduction, and litter prevention. Other program information is briefly discussed and shown at the end of the play. - 1996 - (primary and intermediate grades) (2 copies)

"A KID'S EYE VIEW OF ECOLOGY" - 28:00 min. - This video touches on a variety of subjects under the heading of ecology; some of the subjects are: litter, recycling, pollution, acid rain, the ozone, and conserving water and energy. There are songs in it for the students to sing along. - 1991 - (primary and intermediate grades) P.P.R.

"LAKE ELMO RECYCLING PROJECT" - 7:30 min. - This is a tape of speeches made on Earth Day 1990 regarding plastic recycling containers made of recycled milk jugs and tires developed by Shamrock Inc. and used by the city of Lake Elmo, MN. - 1990 - (secondary grades to adult)

"LITTER LAW ENFORCEMENT" - 12:00 min. - This video talks about litter prevention and law enforcement. It was made by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. - (intermediate grades to adult) P.P.R.

"LITTER PREVENTION SLIDE SHOW" - 6:30 min. - This is a video of slides that talks about litter and litter prevention. It was put together by the Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention, Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources. - 1997 (intermediate grades to adult) P.P.R.

"LITTER QUITTERS" - 3:40 min. - This is just a short music video featuring some mascots from Ohio recycling and litter prevention programs singing about litter prevention. It was made by the Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention, Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources. - 1997 - (preschool to primary grades) P.P.R.

THE LORAX - This book by Dr. Seuss shows how a whole forest can be destroyed and animals have to leave because of a business that uses and uses and doesn't replace what it has used. It ends with one last chance to plant a seed and make it a better place for the future. - 1971 - (preschool to primary grades, can also be acted out with a narrator)

"THE MURKY WATER CAPER" - 30:00 min. - This video is about the polluting of our water resources. It is a slapstick type of play filmed live before an audience of children. The main characters are Detective Tuesday, Teacher- Ms. Brooks, Billy Beaver, Molly Duck, Coho Salmon, Reggie Rat, and several other characters who try to solve and find who is responsible for polluting the stream where Billy Beaver and all the other characters live. It is based on the "Clean Water Act" passed 21 years ago and emphasizes that everybody pollutes the water. - 1992 - (preschool to primary grades) P.P.R. ***Please note that there is one line where the detective says "Do you think I'm going to work for the halibut?" and some students have misinterpreted the word.

"NORTON ENVIRONMENTAL WASTE TO ENERGY" - 8:40 min.- This video is about Solid Waste Problems and how the Norton Company in Medina County, Ohio is handling the Solid Waste problems. It explains that Ohio House Bill 592 requires communities to recycle 25% of their waste. Norton Environmental is a Central Processing Facility that conforms to HB 592 and demonstrates how this is done by taking you on a tour through this facility. Only a third of the waste that comes into this plant goes to a landfill, 42% is recycled, and 15% goes into new products. -6/24/94 - (intermediate grades to adult)

"THE ORIGINAL RECYCLERS" - 10:00 min. - Charles Osgood narrates this tape about scrap recycling. It covers iron, steel, paper, glass, and plastic recycling. - (intermediate grades to adult)

"OUR FRAGILE EARTH" - 16:00 min. - This video discusses recycling in a small town and how they went about initiating it. It also covers paper and how it is recycled. - 1991 - (intermediate grades to adult) P.P.R.

"PAPERMAKING FOR EVERYONE" - 50:00 min. - Arnold Grummer presents papermaking and the procedures. He also talks about problems that can occur and how to correct or avoid them. - (intermediate grades to adult)

"PETE'S PACK-LOOK OUT FOR #1" - 8:00 min. - This tape from the National Association For Plastic Container Recovery (NAPCOR) talks about plastics and specifically plastic #1. - (intermediate grades to adult)

THE PILE OF JUNK - This book by Miriam Schlein is old but makes the point that "one man's junk is another man's treasure. It's a very cute story about an older lady who cleans out her house and people passing by take her junk for their own uses. - 1962 - (preschool and early primary grades)

"PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT: RECYCLE" - 16:00 min. - This video completes the series and discusses recycling. It talks generally about what items can be recycled and shows what happens to some of those that are recycled including glass, aluminum, paper, plastic, cars, and appliances. - 1990 - (intermediate grades to adult) P.P.R.-SSL

"PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT: REDUCE" - 14:00 min. - This video is part of a series; this one concentrates on how to reduce the amount of solid waste that each person throws away. It covers buying items with less packaging, rechargeable batteries, longer life light bulbs, using both sides of paper, giving toys away for others to reuse, and recycling. - 1990 - (intermediate grades to adult) P.P.R.-SSL

"PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT: REUSE" - 13:00 min. - This tape is the second of the series and discusses reusing items. Suggestions include: going to garage sales or stores to buy second-hand items, buying cloth diapers instead of plastic disposable ones, using libraries or buying second-hand books, buying rebuilt car parts, and composting yard and kitchen waste. - 1990 - (intermediate grades to adult) P.P.R.-SSL

"PROTECTING YOUR ENVIRONMENT" - This interactive CD-ROM was prepared by the Ohio EPA. It covers different environmental problems including solid waste management and litter. It also has a couple of games that the students can play. - 2001 - (intermediate grades to adult)

"RECYCLE THIS" - 37:00 min. - A variety tape which covers recycling. Activities include songs, a "back to the future spoof", environmental jeopardy, and a James Brown parody. - 1990 - ( intermediate grades to adult)

"RECYCLING : IT'S NATURE'S WAY" - 8:00 min. - The video starts by discussing recycling in nature briefly then it moves to recycling aluminum cans. - (intermediate grades to adult)

"THE ROTTEN TRUTH" - 30:00 min. - This is a 3-2-1 Contact video from the Children's Television Workshop; a teacher's guide accompanies it. The video covers decomposition, a landfill (including the University of Arizona Garbage Project), the "Not In My BackYard" (N.I.M.B.Y) syndrome, litter, natural recycling, recycling at a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), and reduction, sometimes using songs. - 1990 - (primary grades to adult)

SAVE OUR PLANET - This book by Diane MacEachern introduces the reader to many environmental issues including water pollution, garbage pollution, deforestation, global warming, the "Greenhouse Effect", the ozone layer and acid rain. It then goes on to give you 750 ways you can help clean up the earth in your home, at school, at the office and in your community. - 1990 - (intermediate grades to adult)

"SAVE THE EARTH" - 60:00 min.- This video covers many environmental issues including: air pollution, global warming, the "Greenhouse Effect" , acid rain, the ozone layer, deforestation, water pollution, toxic wastes, landfills, and waste reduction (reduce, reuse, recycle). The "Save the Earth Brigade" wants you to join them, stop using certain products and recycle now! - 1990 - (intermediate grades to adult) P.P.R.

"SHAMROCK INDUSTRIES CURBSIDE RECYCLING CONTAINERS" - 9:05 min. - This tape shows recycling containers made by Shamrock Industries in Minneapolis, MN. and used for curbside recycling. They are made out of consumer plastic using tires and milk jugs to make the 100% recycled recycling containers. - (secondary grades to adult)

SING A WHALE SONG - This book by Tom Chapin and John Forster comes with an audiotape of songs. The story is about a whale who turns a little boy into a whale and shows him all of the beautiful things in his home, the ocean. The whale also shows the "boy whale" pollution that is now in the ocean. Then, the undersea creatures teach a song about stopping the pollution to the "boy whale," who gets turned back into a boy and begins singing to everyone about stopping the pollution. There are also other environmental songs on the tape. - 1993 - (primary grades)

"SOMEBODY ELSE" - 7:43 min. - This video shows a pretend judgment day where a litterbug has to pay for his life of littering. This was put out by the Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention, Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources. - 1997 (intermediate grades to adult) P.P.R.

"STEEL CAN RECYCLING" - 5:00 min. - Three public service announcements using old movies (recycling movies) to express recycling messages. There are short and long versions of each of the three advertisements plus a radio commercial on recycling. - 1993 - (primary grades to adult)

"TIME & TIME AGAIN" - 15:14 min. - High School Students and Adults in this video show how important it is to recycle steel, plastic, glass, aluminum, paper and empty aerosol cans. It points out we must continue to recycle and we should strive for recycling 100% of our waste products. The tape shows what can happen at our landfills and the environment if we do not recycle. - 1994 - (primary grades to adult)

"TINA'S JOURNAL" - 17:00 min. - A high school girl in San Francisco writes in her journal and talks about the three "R's" dealing with solid waste. She starts out with garbage, in general, and then talks about recycling, household hazardous waste, a "Green Club" that she was involved with at school, reuse, reduction through a green shopping tour with her mother, a landfill, and a materials recovery facility (MRF). - 1994 - (intermediate grades to adult)

"TINKA'S PLANET" - 12:00 min. - A cute story about a little girl who began collecting recyclables and getting others to join her. - (primary grades) P.P.R.

"WORKING TOGETHER FOR A HEALTHIER PLANET"- 14:25 min. - Animation is used throughout the video. It points out wherever there is civilization there is still garbage or solid waste. It describes solid waste landfills and how materials recovery facilities (MRF's) are working together to recycle as much material as technology will allow in order to reduce solid wastes that have to be buried in our landfills. The video also discusses plastics and how they are not the problem that people may think they are. It further covers source reduction, recycling, and waste to energy. "WORMANIA" - 26:42 min. - Mary Appelhof, "Worm Woman," teaches all about worms and makes it fun. There are some goofy songs, and the words to sing along with them. The video also contains valid biological information on worms and presents it in a way that younger audiences understand it. It has an activity booklet and a teacher's guide. This video coincides with the use of the worm bin, which is for natural recycling similar to composting. - 1995 - ( primary grades to adult)

WORMS EAT MY GARBAGE - This book by Mary Appelhof explains how to set up and maintain a worm composting system - 1982 - (intermediate grades to adult)

WORMS EAT OUR GARBAGE - This classroom activities guide by Mary Appelhof, Mary Frances Fenton and Barbara Loss Harris is an excellent complement to any science class that is learning about worms. - 1993 - (intermediate grades to adult)

"WORMS AND HOW THEY LIVE" - 18:00 min. - This video also coincides with the use of the worm bin. It explains and examines several different kinds of worms and how they move, what they eat, how they reproduce, and how they are important as natural composters. The two children in the movie also gather worms and make a worm farm. - (intermediate grades to adult) P.P.R.-SSL ***Please note that in some parts of this video the audio does not match the lip movements of the characters.

"YES, I CAN" - 15:00 min. - This is a real cute story about recycling where articles of trash are characters that talk. They try to save themselves by avoiding the landfill and heading for the recycling center. - 1994 - (preschool to primary grades) (2 copies)
