Digging the Basement

Now that the area is prepared, you need to get together with your excavator and decide where you

are going to position your house on the lot. The excavator will then mark out all of

the corners and prepare to start digging the basement.

Our lot has a high water table so we were unable to dig down the normal five to six feet

that a normal basement is dug, so we will have to compensate later by bringing soil in

from the rear of our lot to build up around the house.

The first thing the excavator does is to push aside the topsoil so that it can be spread

on top of the ground again at final grade. This provides a good soil for grass and

flowers to grow. After the topsoil is removed, digging of the basement commences.
