Putting the siding on the house

After the house has the sheathing on the outside walls, the windows and doors are

installed and it is wrapped in Tyvek, you are ready for the siding. We decided to go

with vinyl siding rather than brick as we preferred the look of siding over brick.

Here is the first section of siding going onto the house

The siding took longer than we originally thought due to the fact that we used styrofoam

sheathing rather than OSB/Plywood. The installers had to hunt for the studs like we did

when we installed the sheathing and they had to use longer nails than what is normally

used when installing siding. The house, especially in the front with the bow windows,

has a lot of different angles and sizes which means that almost every piece had to be cut

and fitted.

Another thing that slowed them down was that they had to go back and install the outdoor

receptable cases after they had the siding already up since we had not had the locations

determined when they started and we didn't have the electrical boxes installed yet.

Here is the back almost done.

The final thing that slowed up the siding installers was the fact that we didn't have the

garage built yet, so they could only install the siding on three sides of the house.

If you choose to go with siding, choose an installer that will take the time to fit the

corners and angles in correctly. On a house like ours, if they had not taken the time, it

would have been really noticeable. Also look for installers that wipe down the siding before

they install it onto the house, it will make the house look clean and crisp.

The last part of the siding job is to install the soffit and the facia board. The soffit is the

area of your house between the outside of the walls and the facia board that is on

the ends of the roof trusses. The majority of the time, sections of soffit are installed that

have tiny holes in them.

These holes allow air to enter into the attic to provide ventilation and to prevent the build

up of condensation on the ceiling of the attic. By keeping the condensation to a minimum,

you can extend the life of the wood on your roof.
