Dulci-More Festival 10

Dulci-More Festival 10 will be held Friday through Sunday, May 28-30, at BSA Camp McKinley in Lisbon, OH. This is the tenth annual folk and traditional music festival in the Columbiana County area. Things start with Friday evening’s concert at 7:00 PM including a short opening set by Dulci-More. Next will be a set by Mustard’s Retreat (David Tamulevich and Michael Hough) from Michigan who are singer/songwriters who play guitars, bass, mandolin, mountain dulcimer, harmonica, pennywhistle, and more. The evening concert will end with Mark Alan Wade from the Columbus area who was the 1998 National Hammered Dulcimer Champion and will feature that instrument, but Mark may also play several others. Wade will be joined by a guitarist and possibly others.

Saturday evening’s concert starts at 7:00 PM with a short set by Dulci-More. Bob Zentz from Norfolk, VA will be next with many of the 30 instruments he has been playing for the past 30 years and a wide variety of songs including originals and many songs of the sea. The evening’s concert will conclude with Madeline MacNeil from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia singing with an incredibly clear voice and accompanying herself on hammered dulcimer and mountain dulcimer.

Sunday evening’s concert starting at 7:00 PM will also start with a short opening set by Dulci-More. Guy George and Tull Glazener will perform next. George, from Chardon specializes in hammered dulcimer, steel drums, pennywhistle, and soprano sax while Glazener from Indianapolis specializes in mountain dulcimer and may add accordion. The final evening concert set will be performed by Doofus (Neal & Colleen Walters from PA and John & Heidi Cerrigone from CT) singing mellow harmonies and playing almost anything with strings among them. Bill Schilling from Salem, Dulci-More President and Festival Director, will again be the performing emcee for all of the evening concerts.

Daytime mini-concerts on Saturday and Sunday will feature Marge Diamond from Elyria; Groovin’ Grandpas ’n’ Ma centered in Alliance; Humours ’n Hammers centered in Salem; Mac Kelly from Salem; Susie Large from Marengo; Kathy Leek from Union Mills, IN; Mike Lenz from Suffield; Lesley & Pauline Miller from Bowling Green; Linda Sigismondi from Gallipolis; Stringed Fantasy centered in North Canton; Strings ’n Lace centered in North Canton; Sweet Sounds from Summitville and Pekin; Trillium from the Cleveland area; and Alice Whitehill from Hookstown, PA. Most of the performers have been at previous Dulci-More Festivals and are returning to celebrate this tenth anniversary, but a few groups or performers new to the festival have been added to continue the tradition.

Over fifty workshops are planned during the days on Saturday and Sunday led by performers, by Dulci-More members, and by vendors. Participants can learn basics or advanced techniques of mountain dulcimer (some instruments available for loan), hammered dulcimer, autoharp, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, percussion, song writing, storytelling, singing, jamming, and more including children's workshops.

Sunday morning begins with a gospel sing. Campfires, song circles, and jamming follow the evening concerts. Events start at 9 AM both days with registration beginning at 8 AM. Come for a day, evening, or for the weekend. There is primitive camping (no hook-ups) at the camp. Meals and snacks are available at the festival. There will be musical vendors. Children are always welcome at the festival with responsible adults (with a total of just $5 admission covering all of the children in a family for the full weekend). Pre-registered group discounts are available. Full weekend admission is $25 per person with lower prices per concert or per day.

The festival is hosted by Dulci-More: Folk & Traditional Musicians, a club based at the First United Methodist Church of Salem with members from the tri-state area and beyond. The club is also offering a special program this year for the second time, Dulci-More Festival for Schools, allowing local students to learn more about this style of music from nationally and internationally known recording artists while they are in the area for the festival. Madeline MacNeil will perform for United Local Elementary students, Bob Zentz will perform for East Palestine Elementary students, and someone may perform for the Salem High School Jazz Band. This program is funded by generous donations from Folknet, United Local Elementary School, and Dulci-More.

BSA Camp McKinley is located at 37748 Furnace Road, Lisbon, OH. From the center of Lisbon, follow 30 west (Lincoln Way), turn right (north) just before the bridge at the edge of town, follow Logtown Rd. Doofus

Doofus includes Neal & Coleen Walters from Greeencastle, PA and John & Heidi Cerrigione from Ellington, CT. They sing with great harmonies and play mountain and hammered dulcimers, autoharps, guitars, banjos, mandolins, bass, and more. They have two CDs as a group, and each couple has released a recording since they were last with us at Dulci-More Festival 7. Members have written songbooks and other books.

Guy George with Tull Glazener

Guy George is a rhythmic, melodic hammered dulcimer player with a definite jazz influence to his playing style. He also plays saxophones, flute, whistle, steel drum, and keyboard. His wife, Sharrie, performs and records with him on the guitar. Their CD is Dream Castle. Guy also is included on Maddie MacNeil's latest CD, As Time Goes By. Guy and Sharrie joined us from their home in Concord, Ohio for Dulci-More Festival 7. Demetrius Steinmetz performed along with Guy and Sharrie at Dulci-More Festival 8. At that time, Guy and Demetrius were recording as guest artists on Plays Well with Others, a CD by Tull Glazener and Jim Sperry. Since then, Guy and Tull have performed together at several festivals. Tull is from Indianapolis, IN. He is known for his mountain dulcimer playing, but he is also known to bring out an accordion for jam sessions.

Madeline MacNeil

Madeline MacNeil is the Editor and Publisher of Dulcimer Players News. Maddie has been a folk singer since 1972. Her voice is strikingly clear. She accompanies herself on hammered and mountain dulcimers. Maddie has several recordings as well as books and videos from Mel Bay. She comes from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Maddie was with us for Dulci-More Festival 6. She has also presented a concert and workshop for Dulci-More in our continuing concert series at the Kent Salem Lecture Hall.

Mustard’s Retreat (Michael Hough & David Tamulevich)

Mustard’s Retreat includes David Tamulevich and Michael Hough from Ann Arbor, MI. Both are known to sing melodies and harmonies on original songs and those of others. Their accompaniment includes guitars, bass, mountain dulcimer, harmonica, whistle, and more. Some great storytelling is usually part of their performances as well as the music. David also works as an agent representing and managing major folk artists so that he will include a workshop on the business of folk music at the festival. They have at least five recordings available. They were with us for Dulci-More Festival 8.

Mark Alan Wade

Mark Alan Wade returns for the seventh time to a Dulci-More Festival. Mark joined us from his home in Texas for Festival 7, but now he is back in the Columbus, Ohio area near his home area (by way of South Carolina). Dulci-More Festival 2 was the first festival at which Mark presented workshops (when he was still in high school). He had won the regional hammered dulcimer championship then and later earned the 1998 national hammered dulcimer championship at Winfield, Kansas. Roger (his father from Marysville), has accompanied Mark on guitar at our previous festivals and may be talked into helping out on some songs this year. Mark has four recordings and books.

Bob Zentz

Bob Zentz is from Norfolk, Virginia. He plays over thirty instruments and has been performing for over thirty years. He is an award winning singer/songwriter who also sings and plays traditional Celtic ballads and tunes, sea chanteys and other songs of the sea, tales of old timers and old rhymers, science fiction songs, and more with a repertoire of over 2000 songs. On WHRV [Public Radio], Bob is the host and founder of In the Folk Tradition, Southeast Virginia's oldest Folk Radio Show (since 1977), Sunday evening, 6-7 pm at 89.5 FM (and live on the web where I am listening to it as I write this). He has four recordings and regularly gives concerts, lectures, classes, and informances for schools, elder-hostels, festivals, and many others near home, on cruises, and abroad. He was with us for Dulci-More Festival 9.

Bill Schilling

Bill Schilling is a high-energy folk-style singer and multi-instrumentalist who believes that this type of music should be inclusive. He is the founder and leader of Dulci-More and the Dulci-More Festival and a member of many other groups, which share or support the music. At Dulci-More Festivals, he has performed as Bill Schilling with Carol Ellis; Bill Schilling, Linda Sigismondi, and Marge Diamond; Bill Schilling & Folks; Threes Co.; Whistler's Lane; and presented his Schilling's Slides, Songs, & Stories program. Bill has put together the music that Dulci-More uses and has it available in several volumes and formats: Dulci-More Public Domain Songbooks -- Volumes 1, 2, 3, Christmas Volume (all with numbers for lap dulcimer melody strings as well as music, chords, and lyrics), Autoharp Volume (with melody chord numbers in place of the dulcimer numbers) and General Volume (with DAA Numbers) which is the full size version of the four smaller volumes plus much more material. The full size version is over 300 pages with over 300 songs. Bill has released a CD, Songs from Canal Days, with Linda Sigismondi and continues to threaten to release more recordings upon the world.
