Dulci-More brought Susan Trump back to Salem on Monday, April 26, 2004 at 7:30 PM for a concert at the Kent Salem Lecture Hall and for a mountain dulcimer workshop on Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at 7:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church of Salem. She was in the area to do an Artist in Residence Program for songwriting at East Palestine Elementary School for the third grade students during that time, and Dulci-More agreed to help provide funding for that program. The concert was presented by Dulci-More: Folk & Traditional Musicians in cooperation with Dr. Ann Waters of the Kent Salem Music Department. For more information contact Bill Schilling at 330-332-4420 or at bill@billschilling.org or Dr. Waters at 330-332-0361. From the parking lot at Kent Salem (2491 State Route 45 South, Salem, OH 44460 on State Route 45 a couple miles south of Salem which means taking a right by the Dairy Mart south of Salem for those who have been on the bypass coming from the north or west) walk all the way to any entrance of the building and follow signs to the Lecture Hall which is basically in the center of the building (there should also be flyers taped up to direct people there). Prices are $8.00 per person at the door ($6.00 per person for Kent Salem Students or Dulci-More Members) and a total of $4.00 for all children in a family. Prices for the workshop are $15.00 per participant or $20.00 per participant for the concert and workshop combined. Please pre-register for the workshop at the concert or by contacting Bill Schilling.

This was the seventh concert presented in this series by Dulci-More and the Kent Salem Music Department with previous concerts by Bill Staines, by Stephen Seifert, by Bryan Bowers, by Patty Looman, and by Madeline MacNeil. Other concerts previously presented by Dulci-More at the Meeting Room of the Salem Historical Society or at the First United Methodist Church of Salem have included Bryan Bowers, Susan Trump, Pat Travis with Bill Matlack, and Patty Looman. Bryan Bowers will present a concert at the Salem Historical Society Meeting Room on Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 7:30 PM.

Susan’s recordings and books were available at the concert. Refreshments during the intermission were provided by Dulci-More members.

For years, Susan Trump has been winning fans with her singing, her songwriting prowess, and her outstanding instrumental skill on mountain dulcimer, guitar, and banjo. She has released three best-selling solo recordings, What the Hill People Say, Tree of Life, and Live at Caffe Lena, her 1999 release which captures the excitement of one of her “sold out” weekend performances. She has produced the widely acclaimed CD Masters of the Mountain Dulcimer featuring nineteen of the finest players in the country. Susan was also featured in two public television specials, Christmas in the Adirondacks and People Near Here. She was voted first in “all time favorite shows” at the Caffe Lena, the longest running coffeehouse in the country.

Susan's magic stems from her ability to link the pastoral, tranquil images of traditional rural America to our contemporary life. Her songs touch the heart, recall the past, and inspire the times ahead. Her spontaneous sense of humor always adds a fresh touch to her performances.

Ms. Trump is a much sought after instructor and performer whose work has included The Buckeye Dulcimer Festival and Shady Grove Dulcimer Camp in Ohio; The Old Songs Festival in New York; Summer Solstice, in California; Glen Rose and SAM Fest in Texas; Appalachian State University at Boone, North Carolina; Heartland Dulcimer Camp, Kansas City, Missouri; The Ozark Folk Center in Arkansas; Kentucky Music Week and The Yellowbanks Festival in Kentucky; and other festivals nationwide. She has won awards in both banjo and mountain dulcimer competitions.

Leading youth groups to work with disabled miners in West Virginia stimulated Ms. Trump’s interest in traditional folk culture. Since then she has conducted extensive studies of Appalachian life, arts, music, and instrument makers. Her love of Anglo-American music has taken her from the mountains of Southern Appalachia and the Adirondacks to the British Isles, where she has collected and performed traditional music.

Ms. Trump also enjoys sharing her music with school children. She has been associated with the New York Foundation for the Arts since 1986, and has been awarded several “Meet the Composer” grants for songwriting from the National Endowment for the Arts. Throughout her career she has shared her music in thousands of schools with children and their families.

Previously Dulci-More brought Susan Trump to Salem on Friday, October 19. All activities were at the meeting room of the Salem Historical Society (across the parking lot from the First United Methodist Church of Salem) at 208 South Broadway, Salem. Dulci-More members and listeners know Susan from our rendition of her song, Grandfather’s Barn. Dulci-More members brought along desserts to share for a great dessert bar during breaks in the evening’s activities.

Susan presented a workshop from 7:00-8:15 PM and a concert from 8:30-9:45 PM. Following another break to give folks a chance to get more desserts and beverages, to purchase Susan’s CDs or items from the Historical Society Gift Shop, and to visit with the artist, we took about 45 minutes for our usual Dulci-More jam (open to all) along with Susan. For those attending both the workshop and the concert, the cost was $20/person. The cost for the workshop only was $15/person. The concert cost was $8/person or $5/elementary student.

The workshop, Living in the Country, was one that Susan often presents as a DAD dulcimer workshop of traditional and contemporary songs of rural living. We asked her to modify it into a singing jam that was also appropriate for other instruments and vocalists. Susan indicated her willingness to do that as it gets the creative juices flowing.

About 10 Dulci-More members and others were present for the workshop and about 30 enjoyed the concert. Many comments were made about the great talent and the great personality of Susan Trump. People enjoyed having this kind of presentation in the Historical Society Meeting Room which was very comfortable for this group and would easily accommodate twice as many.
